What is Women’s and Gender Studies?
Women’s and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines the development, transmission and transformation of ideas and attitudes about women and gender across societies, cultures, and historic periods. The program examines:
- The global diversity of women’s lives and experiences
- The interaction between gender and race, ethnicity, class, abilities, and sexualities
- Initiatives for social change and equality
- Transnational feminisms

Women’s studies draws on history, sociology, literature, politics, and psychology. While pursuing a women’s studies degree, students study feminist theory, women’s history, and the intersections of gender and society. Many programs also include courses on race and gender, masculinity studies, and LGBTQ+ studies.
